Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The play received its world premiere in London’s West End on 30th July 2016.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

I truly enjoyed this script once I got past the idea that it is NOT a young Harry Potter story. I found the aging Harry just as insecure as in younger days, and his insecurity still involved the loss of his parents, and the Dark Lord with the evil still surrounding him. However, his new fears were not only for himself but his son. I found this to be refreshing as most “Muggle” parents can identify with those fears. I did find the story line a bit weak and difficult to follow in a few areas but this is understandable since this is not a 300+ page book . There is a limited amount of time in which to build this story to a conclusion. Any HP fan needs to read and enjoy this for what it is - a script and not a novel. Settle into the right mindset and you will find it entertaining.

  • Disappointing

I loved the Harry Potter series and this does not live up to the standards of the original 7 books. If I were to think of a comparison, it would be fan fictions written by teenagers. Read the cursed child if you want, but to me, this book never existed.

I really enjoyed this and the pacing was just right. Makes me want to read more plays.
  • A Hideous, Inaccurate Continuation

Whoever gives this book five stars either has no knowledge of Harry Potter - the true series of seven books - or sees no reason why The Cursed Child or any work of literature should subscribe to the details of its literary predecessors. To portray Hermione, who declared that she would work in the Ministry of Magic which she perceived as corrupt, undeserving of her talents, and unfulfilling of her desire to do good in the world, would become Minister of Magic as she did in this play, is ridiculous. It is also sexist and offensive that in the alternate universes explored, she would be a harsh, bitter, slighted spinster just because Ron never married her. Harry, furthermore - and it pains me to call the man portrayed "Harry" since he bears no resemblance to the real protagonist - is uncharacteristically vengeful and treats Albus with poor, rude, insensitivity; that is a manner that the orphaned, neglected Harry would never dare impart on his own child. The list goes on and I could continue it, but I do not like this play and were it my choice, I would not accept it as a canon story of the wizarding world I grew up with.

At first it was very annoying getting used to the play format but after a while it didnt bother me that much. But over all great story even though there was alot of holes in it, I hope there’s more to come!!!

Excellent read and a lot of fun. Rowling weaves in the previous books in this screenplay. Very well done. Hope there will be more!
